The Department of Computer Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) in the J. B. Speed School of Engineering at the University of Louisville (UofL) invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position beginning fall 2020. Outstanding candidates at higher ranks may also be considered. Applicants must have received a doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field by the start date of the position, must have demonstrated a strong potential for excellence and productivity in research commensurate with the expectations of an R1 university, and must have a commitment to high-quality teaching.
Exceptional candidates in all areas of Computer Engineering and Computer Science, or closely related fields will be considered, but of particular interest are candidates specializing in the areas of Robotics, Embedded Systems, Internet of Things (IoT), Hardware-Embedded Intelligence and Learning and Optimization, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Cyber Physical Systems. Successful candidates will be expected to teach core undergraduate CECS courses such as introduction to programming, data structures, algorithms, embedded systems, and operating systems, in addition to graduate-level courses in her/his research areas; develop an independent, externally funded research program; mentor diverse students; participate in all aspects of the department’s mission, and serve the profession.
Candidates will be expected to collaborate closely with leading researchers in Robotics and to participate in new initiatives such as the Louisville Automation and Robotics Research Institute (LARRI), and the KY NSF EPSCOR KAMPERS project on augmented robots and structures.
The CECS Department has been a degree granting department since 1971, when it was known as the Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science. CECS currently has 16 tenured or tenure-track faculty and two term faculty with wide-ranging research interests and strong research groups in aerial robotics, bioinformatics, computer architecture, computer systems, cybersecurity, cyber-physical systems, data mining, databases, innovative and emerging technologies, knowledge discovery and web mining, mobile information networks and distributed systems, multimedia, real-time and embedded systems, and visualization and intensive graphics. Faculty research (with 2018 expenditures exceeding $1.6 million and new awards exceeding $2.1 million) has been supported by a variety of federal grants and industrial contracts (NSF, NIH, NASA, NSA, DoD, DoE, Kindred Healthcare), including multiple prestigious young investigator awards (four NSF CAREER and one NSF CRII). The department has extensive interdisciplinary collaborations across several units at UofL, including Arts and Sciences, Social Work, Law, Medicine, Nursing, and Public Health, as well as with the other seven departments within the Speed School of Engineering.
The department offers ABET-accredited BS and MENG degrees in CECS, an MS degree in Computer Science, and a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science and Engineering, as well as graduate certificates in Data Science and Cybersecurity. The enrollment for the fall of 2018 includes 238 undergraduates, 96 master’s students (32 MENG and 64 MS), and 48 Ph.D. students.
