As Canada’s top-ranked electrical and computer engineering department and among the top ten in North America, The Edward S. Rogers Sr. Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE) has a strong track record of excellence in research, teaching, and innovation. Among our faculty are 33 Fellows of the IEEE, 10 Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada, 12 endowed chair holders, and one endowed professorship.
Located in the heart of one of the world’s most liveable city, the University of Toronto is home to leaders in engineering and computing, including 2019 A.M. Turing Award recipient, University Professor Emeritus Geoffrey Hinton. Since 2013 alone, more than 13 startups have spun off from ECE research; we are a strong player in the city’s vibrant startup ecosystem — Toronto was ranked 15th of 1,000 cities in StartupBlink’s Startup Ecosystem Rankings 2019.
The diversity of U of T Engineering is our strength: the proportion of women faculty members is more than 21%, and the number of women professors has nearly tripled from 21 in 2005–2006 to 57 today. For the last four consecutive years, the incoming undergraduate cohort at the Faculty has included approximately 40% women. We are reaching out to communities that have traditionally been underrepresented in electrical and computer engineering, and we are working to foster a robust culture of equity and inclusion.
Last year, U of T’s newest building, the Myhal Centre for Engineering Innovation and Entrepreneurship, opened. Designed to foster collaboration between researchers, students, industry partners and alumni, the building features prototyping facilities, multidisciplinary research hubs, design studios and technology-enhanced learning spaces.
